Some wore original surplus and some wore camouflage designed by companies such as FUBU. Anna Sui anticipated the current trend with a sequined camouflage cocktail dress as early as 1996. Best Friend Espresso, in Kenmore Washington, pride themselves on their great coffee, customer service, the up-beat, friendly environment, and their beautiful, brand-new establishment. However, it is their scantilly clad barista babes making triple xxx esspressos with a little T and A, in an ever-changing variety of costumes, that really draws the crowd.

While serving up steamy lattés has become the new proving grounds for the old adage; "Sex Sells," these catwalk cafés know that a sexy, polished look boosts business. As Candice Law, a barista at Cowgirls Espresso in Tukwila, dressed in a short, sheer, baby-doll negligee and coordinated pink panties, says; "Everybody's excited to see you."

Commuter coffee stops, cluttering the Northwest's roadsides, are adding bodacious baristas, flirty service and ever more-revealing outfits to the menu quicker than you can say "Grande Caramel Macchiato," to attract a crowd that is drawn by the drinks and the boobs. For the price of a transparent cup of frothy liquid, you can perk up your sex life with a jolt of java and more.

Starbucks just might have to turn up the heat to compete with the cafés gone wild. Baristas sporting hot-pink hot pants and tight white tank tops and day-of-the-week theme outfits ranging from racy lingerie to "fetish" ensembles are serving up all kinds of the hot stuff at steamy stops such as Tukwila's Cowgirls Espresso, Port Orchard's Natté Latté, Moka Girls Espresso in Auburn and at several Cowgirls Espresso stands in the Northwest. Bikini tops are the special at Café Lorraine on Highway 9 in Woodinville, and the women of The Sweet Spot in Shoreline pose provocatively in Playmate-style profiles on the stand's Web site.

The law requires that employees cover their breasts and buttocks, so there will be no "thong Thursday," as some customers have requested, however, Best Friend Espresso does do theme days, such as "schoolgirl" or adding glasses for a sexy "secretary" look, manager Heather Bacon said.

The advent of "sexpresso" is a bit hard to track. Perhaps it all started during the 1950’s with this Folgers coffee advertisement,:



Business and baristas debate over who pioneered the idea of the edgy outfits at the coquette cafés, but they agree that by sweetening the product, with a smile and maybe a shot of carmel syrup, they've reached out to customers who've never set foot in a Starbucks.

A representative of the Starbucks company said it has no plans to sex up the dress code, as it wouldn't fit the company's brand. But can Starbucks really compete with busty barista babes, dressed scantilly in sexy lingerie outfits, and serving up steamy hot pick-me-ups?

Only time will tell whether these businesses do a really good job of positioning themselves in a highly competitive industry or just end up as loser lattés.
